– The Chicago Fire Soccer Club announced the annual team award winners, as selected by local media members, naming goalkeeper Sean Johnson Most Valuable Player and Defensive Player of the Year. Forward Quincy Amarikwa’s team-leading eight goals earned him the club’s Golden Boot award.
MOST VALUABLE PLAYER/DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR:
Goalkeeper Sean Johnson was named 2014 Chicago Fire Most Valuable Player and Defensive Player of the Year. In his fifth season with the Men in Red, Johnson made a total of 96 saves, including the New England Revolution’s Chris Tierney’s
penalty kick attempt
on July 12, en route to six shutouts. The 25-year-old Lilburn, Ga., native is one of only three players to have appeared in a team-leading 33 matches this season. Friday’s match against the Houston Dynamo marked Johnson’s 150
th
competitive match for the Fire. This is Johnson’s second consecutive Defensive Player of the Year award for the Fire. A U.S. international, Johnson was most recently called in by U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann for the U.S. vs. Honduras match on Oct. 14.
GOLDEN BOOT:
Forward Quincy Amarikwa’s team-leading eight goals earned him the 2014 Chicago Fire Golden Boot. Amarikwa, who joined the Fire prior to the start of the 2013 season, notched eight goals and added five assists in 32 matches during the 2014 campaign. A breakout year for the Bakersfield, Calif. product, Amarikwa’s previous season high was the three goals for the Men in Red in 2013.
