CHICAGO (Jan. 14, 2024) – Chicago Fire FC today announced that the Club has acquired defender Tobias Salquist (pronounced: to-BEE-as SAL-qwist) via transfer from Danish club Silkeborg IF. Salquist is under contract through the 2025 season with a Club option for 2026. Salquist will occupy an international position on the roster, pending receipt of his P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC). Per Club and MLS policy, additional terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“We have been monitoring Tobias for almost 18 months and are impressed with many of his qualities,” said Chicago Fire FC Sporting Director Georg Heitz. “Not only do we feel that his technically ability will translate to play in MLS, but he has been a key player for a club that is well-organized and fighting for the top spots in a competitive league.”
Salquist, 28, joins the Fire from Denmark Superliga club Silkeborg IF, where he has spent the past three years. During that time, Salquist was a key part of a Silkeborg side that had recently returned to the Superliga after winning the Danish First Division in 2018-2019 and has remained in the Superliga ever since.
Salquist originally joined Silkeborg from FC Midtjylland as a U-17 player in 2011, before signing a three-year contract with the club in 2015. Following a loan with Fjolnir (2016-2017) in Iceland and his departure in 2018, Salquist spent time at Waasland-Beveren (2018-2019) in Belgium, Lillestrom SK (2019-2020) in Norway and Hobro IK (2020-2021) in Denmark before returning to Silkeborg in 2021.
