The Chicago Fire Academy Under-15 and Under-17 sides were active over the weekend as the 2019 Generation adidas Cup Fall Regionals took place in Kansas City, Mo.
One of the premier competitive youth soccer tournaments in North America, the 13th edition of the tournament began with 25 MLS U-17 teams ad 24 MLS U-15 teams split across four groups. Both of the Fire sides got underway in Group B.
The U-17s ran through their first three matches of regionals, finishing the weekend a perfect 3-0-0 with zero goals allowed. Alex Monis and Brian Gutierrez helped power the side to a 2-0 day one victory over the Seattle Sounders on Friday, Oct. 11, before dispatching Minnesota United by the same scoreline on Saturday. Monis and Missael Rodriguez were the goal-scorers. The U-17s kept it consistent on Monday's final matchday, picking up a 2-0 victory over the LA Galaxy. Wyatt Borso opened scoring, while Monis found the net in his third-straight match. The Fire sit atop Group B with nine points ahead of regionals resuming play in Los Angeles in February.
The top two U-17 teams from each group will advance to play in Division 1 of the 2020 Generation adidas Cup Finals at the Toyota Soccer Center in Frisco, Texas, while the third and fourth placed teams from each group will play in Division 2. The remaining teams will play in Division 3.
For the U-15 age group, the four group winners will advance to the Final Event to compete in an 8-team international challenge.
The Fire U-15s rebounded from a 2-0 opening day defeat to the Seattle Sounders to earn wins over both of their Minnesota United and LA Galaxy counterparts. In a 3-0 win over Minnesota, Sergio Oregel, Benji Chavarria, Zion Ash got the goals. On Monday, Carlos Nevarez and Roman Eisa provided the fire power in a 2-1 win over LA. The U-15s sit in fourth place in Group B, also set to resume regionals in LA in February.
