FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (Aug. 14, 2022) – Chicago Fire FC II ended their three-game road trip with a 1-0 loss at New England Revolution II on Sunday evening. New England defender Pierre Cayet earned Player of the Match designation with the only goal of the match, as well as a goal-saving effort against the Fire’s Josh Penn following a penalty kick. Following six of their last eight matches on the road, the Fire return home next week for the rest of August as the final stretch nears.
The Fire began play with dominant possession, making several forays into the Revolution’s box. In the 12th minute, Matteo Kidd was fouled inside the 18, awarding a penalty kick to the Fire. Penn stepped up to the spot but couldn’t cash in as New England goalkeeper Max Weinstein made a diving save on the kick; a follow-up effort was then blocked by Cayet. The match settled into end-to-end action, with each team trying to take the advantage of the other’s numbers forward on counters. New England nearly did so in the 36th minute on a breakaway, but Chris Brady saved to keep the match scoreless as the half ended.
The match resumed with split possession, but the Revolution soon struck first on a corner kick in the 52nd minute. Jake Rozhansky’s kick found the head of Cayet, who scored his second goal of the season. Fire head coach Ludovic Taillandier made some tactical changes to weather the early storm, including sending in the red-hot Missael Rodríguez in the 70th minute. But Weinstein and the Revolution defense withstood the Chicago attack to come away with their first victory in eight matches.
NEXT GAME: Chicago Fire FC II return home to SeatGeek Stadium for the first time since July 17 to face NYCFC II on Saturday, August 20. First kick is slated for 7 p.m. CT and the match stream will start five minutes prior on MLSNEXTPro.com.
