MONTREAL, Quebec(Aug. 20, 2016) – The Chicago Fire picked up their first road win of 2016 courtesy a 3-0 blanking of the Montreal Impact at Stade Saputo on Saturday night.
New man Luis Solignac put the Fire ahead just 15 minutes into his second start since being acquired in July. After David Accam made a trademark zig-zagging run down the center of the Montreal defense, he laid the ball off to an in-tow Solignac. The Argentine made a cut to his right in the box and coolly finished across the face of Evan Bush’s net.
Accam nearly doubled the lead just three minutes later. He found himself on the ball with space outside the Impact 18 and blasted an attempt from distance. Bush was up to the challenge, however, and tipped the shot up into the woodwork and out. The Fire would carry their 1-0 lead into the locker room at half time.
The Fire doubled their lead in the 73rd minute just after Arturo Alvarez came on to replace John Goossens in the midfield. Alvarez made a run into the center of the Montreal box as Michael de Leeuw carried the ball in near the goal mouth. The Dutchman played a low cross through traffic into the center of the area, and Alvarez was able to redirect the ball to the foot of Accam, who pushed it past Bush to double the Fire advantage.
Matt Polster would put a bow on things in the 89th minute. After a Solignac shot was blocked and cleared, Polster won the ball outside the 18 and advanced into the box unmarked. Polster’s shot curled past Bush across the goalmouth and wrapped up the Fire’s first three points on the road in 2016.
The road victory was the first for Chicago since July 12, 2014, bringing to an end the club’s 36-match league winless stretch away from home.
The Men in Red are back at home for a mid-week contest against the LA Galaxy on Wednesday night. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. CT with coverage on CSN Chicago Plus and 97.5 Poder.
