After serving under Bruce Arena with the U.S. Men's National Team at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, Dave Sarachan was the man chosen to fill Bob Bradley's shoes as the second manager of the Chicago Fire in 2003.
Sarachan's first year proved successful, helping the club to the 2003 U.S. Open Cup, Supporters Shield and one win from the first-ever MLS Treble. Before any of that, Sarachan used a third round pick in the 2003 MLS SuperDraft to select a midfielder out of the University of North Carolina, who has since spent all 12 seasons of his professional career here in Chicago.
Joined in a draft class among the likes of now teammate Mike Magee, Ricardo Clark, Eddie Gaven, Pat Noonan, Brian Carroll and Todd Dunivant, Pause has played the more games for the clubs that selected him than any other. He's second just to Carroll in overall MLS games played.
Stats out of the way, listen to Sarachan's memories of selecting Pause at the SuperDraft and the retiring midfielder's contributions from his five seasons in Chicago:
