That’s one way to make an impression.
Dutch midfielder John Goossens, formerly of Eredivisie clubs NEC and Feyenoord and a product of the Ajax youth system, has been in Chicago Fire training camp as a trialist since February 8 when he joined the squad in Tampa. Goossens performed well in a preseason friendly against the Philadelphia Union, but stood out in a big way in a Thursday scrimmage with the University of Portland.
Goossens started in the Fire midfield and delivered a spectacular volley from 35 yards, leaving the Pilots goalkeeper flat-footed and giving his side a 1-0 lead at the 40-minute mark.
Watch (and re-watch) video of the goal below. Goossens and the Chicago Fire next play Sunday at 4:30 p.m. CT against fellow MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the preseason Simple Invitational. Catch a live stream of the match on Chicago-Fire.com.
