FRISCO, TEXAS (Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012) – FC Dallas Reserves defeated the Chicago Fire Reserves, 2-1, today on the adidas Field at FC Dallas Stadium.
Dallas’ goals were scored by Bobby Warshaw and Matias Jara. Dominic Oduro scored for the Fire Reserves (4-5-0, 12 points). The win moves FC Dallas Reserves (6-3-1, 19 points) atop the MLS Reserve League’s Central/Mountain Division.
FC Dallas took a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute when Bryan Leyva sent a corner kick into the area. The initial cross was cleared back out to Leyva, who sent a second ball to the top of the six-yard box. Fellow Homegrown player Victor Ulloa rose above his defender to head a shot towards goal. A Fire defender deflected the ball away but center back Bobby Warshaw was first to the loose ball, striking a first-touch shot past Chicago goalkeeper Jay Nolly from the penalty spot.
The two teams played evenly for the next half hour before Chicago Fire Reserves leveled the match, 1-1, in the 36th minute.
Chicago’s Tony Walls started the play when he received the ball on the right flank with his back to goal. Walls dropped a pass for Fire captain Dan Gargan, who picked out forward Dominic Oduro with a sharp pass played on the ground into the area. Oduro beat his marker with his first touch, leaving him one-on-one with FC Dallas goalkeeper Richard Sanchez. Oduro feinted left before finishing the chance with a high shot towards the right post.
FC Dallas Reserves fired right back and regained a one-goal lead in the 40th minute. Ulloa started the sequence by playing a long ball over the top of Chicago’s back line. Forward Scott Sealy ran down the ball near the end line and beat his defender before walking in against Nolly. The Fire goalkeeper came off his line to challenge Sealy, prompting the veteran forward to knock a lateral pass to Matias Jara, who finished easily into the empty net to give Dallas a 2-1 advantage.
The Fire Reserves had the first good scoring chance of the second half in the 57th minute when midfielder Victor Pineda made a solid run through the central midfield and was rewarded with a pass. After receiving the ball, Pineda picked his head up and fired a hard, one-hop shot towards the back post. Sanchez fought off the chance, pushing it to the top right corner of the six-yard box, where FC Dallas defender Carlos Rodriguez recovered in time to clear the ball away from danger.
Oduro had a similar chance to his first-half goal on his foot in stoppage-time, but this time Sanchez got the better of him. The Mexican Under-20 National Team goalkeeper held his ground and made a left-footed kick save to preserve the 2-1 victory for FC Dallas Reserves.
Currently in first place of the MLS Reserves League’s Central/Mountain Division, FC Dallas Reserves’ fate depends on the Houston Dynamo Reserves (5-2-2, 17 points). The Dynamo Reserves tied the Real Salt Lake Reserves, 5-5, today in Sandy, Utah. The draw moves Houston within two points of FC Dallas Reserves. The Dynamo Reserves final match of the season is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 13 against the Fire Reserves.
