Former Chicago Fire forward and MLS Most Valuable Player Award winner Mike Magee is set to be enshrined in the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame at their Wintrust Arena induction ceremony on Wednesday night.
âEach year the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame honors and memorializes athletes, coaches, teams, officials, media and others who have distinguished themselves with their contributions to sports. Magee, 35, is the latest in a line of former Fire players to be honored, joining 2018 inductee Frank Klopas and 2017 inductee Brian McBride. Former Club owner Andrew Hauptman was recognized by the organization as its Sports Advocate of the Year in 2017.
Over a 14-year career in MLS, Magee made a combined 316 appearances for the New York MetroStars/Red Bulls, Los Angeles Galaxy, and his hometown Fire. His highest-scoring season came in 2013, when Magee finished his season in Chicago with 21 goals scored en route to winning MLS MVP honors. In addition to the individual accolades, Magee was a two-time MLS Cup winner (2011, 2012) and a two-time MLS Supporters' Shield winner (2010, 2011) with the LA Galaxy.
The Elmhurst, Il. native will enter the Hall of Fame alongside Northwestern Athletic Director Jim Phillips, Harold Baines (formerly of the Chicago White Sox), Israel Idonije (formerly of the Chicago Bears), and Rick Sutcliffe (formerly of the Chicago Cubs). The evening's honorees also include Desmond Howard, Lou Holtz, Bryant Young, Patrick Kane, and Jeff Joniak.
