IN GOOD HANDS WITH MIKE MAGEE
Upon returning to Chicago in May, Mike Magee came ready to light a fire under the Med in Red. “Magic Mike,” as he’s affectionately called, brought the speed and sparks the Fire needed to turn the 2013 season around, leading the Men in Red to the best record in MLS since his acquisition. The Chicago native and 2013 league MVP talks about leading the team, life with his daughter and living in his hometown again.
Q. Which is the goal or game that you remember the most?
I would say that my first MLS Cup that the LA Galaxy won in 2011 would have to be the game that I remember most. That’s what you work all year for and to finally win the MLS Cup was amazing. As far as the goal I remember most, I don’t really have one off the top of my head. The one that I’m remembering now is one that I scored against Manchester City with the Galaxy. We were down 1-0 and I had a volley from about 30 yards out right over English National Team goalkeeper Joe Hart’s head.
Q. What do you want to achieve in the next ten years?
A couple more MLS Cups would be nice, but I’d be happy with one and won’t get greedy just yet. As far as after my career is over, I am hoping for a smooth transition into real life post-soccer.
Q. Who or what inspires you and why? What is the most important lesson you learned in life?
I think I’ve always been inspired by my dad. I think he’s been a good role model, he’s my best friend and I think he has set the bar at a pretty high level for me to try and live up to. Coming back to Chicago helps remind me of this even more.
The most important lesson I’ve learned is to not give up on your dreams, even in the face of adversity.
Q. What is something unique or interesting about yourself that you have not shared in an interview yet? How would your teammates describe you?
I don’t think I’ve shared this yet, but my favorite TV show is How I Met Your Mother.
I think my teammates would say that I am very blunt and straightforward. I will tell it like it is and I will try my best to win at all costs.
Q. When you were five years old, what did you want to be when you grew up and why?
I wanted to be a basketball player. Growing up in Chicago during that era with the Bulls and Michael Jordan and their dynasty, every kid here wanted to be a basketball player.
Q. What’s the most daring thing you’ve ever done? Who would play you in an action film and why?
Not too long ago, I bungee jumped up in Grand Rapids, Michigan. That’s probably the most daring thing I’ve ever done.
This is a tough question. I would have to say either Jean-Claude Van Damme or Chuck Norris would play me in an action film. Chuck Norris is one of the toughest guys on the planet.
Q. Were you ever affected by a natural disaster such as a hurricane, a fire or a flood? In the event of a natural disaster, what is the first thing you grab out of your home?
Well, when I lived in California there were a lot of earthquakes but nothing too crazy. I was in Manhattan Beach, so I didn’t have to deal with any of the landslides but those earthquakes are still scary as can be. Being from Chicago I had no idea what was happening, so I literally said out loud, “I think the earth is shaking.” I was so panicked that I couldn’t figure out what the exact term for it was.
In the event of a natural disaster, obviously I would grab my daughter. As far as material possessions, I would have to say a watch that my grandfather gave me.

Creo que no he compartido esto todavía, pero mi programa de televisión favorito es How I Met Your Mother.
