Although he is one of the most reserved players in the Fire locker room, Jeff Larentowicz is the club’s stoic leader and captain in Logan Pause’s absence. A Philadelphia native, Larentowicz attended Brown University and was their leading scorer before being drafted by the New England Revolution in 2005. Before joining the Fire this season, he went on to help win MLS Cup with the Colorado Rapids in 2010. Appearing in 32 of the Fire’s 34 games, his leadership in midfield was instrumental during his first season in Chicago.
Q. Which is the goal or game that you remember the most?
For the most memorable game, I’d definitely say the MLS Cup 2010 with the Colorado Rapids which was a really unique experience. No goal really stands out as most memorable because they’re all different. But, if I had to pick one, I would say the goal as recent against DC United on October 4 was pretty memorable. I knew that it was an important game to the Fire and to our fans, so score the first goal was pretty neat.
Q. When you were five years old, what did you want to be when you grew up? What do you want to achieve in the next ten years?
I’ve always known that I wanted to be an athlete, but not necessarily soccer. I loved basketball, so when I was five, I think I just wanted to play basketball when I grew up.
In the next ten years, I’d like to start a family. I’m not sure where, because who knows if I really have the choice, but I’d love to start it here in Chicago.
Q. Who or what inspires you and why? What is the most important lesson you learned in life?
That’s a hard one. I’d have to say my family and my parents inspire me. They have always worked hard, and though I’m not doing a job that is one that they did, this is still a job that I work hard at and can achieve goals.
For me, the most important lesson I’ve learned in life is that you get out what you put in. If you want to get any sort of return in life, you have to work hard to get it. It isn’t just given to you without the hard work.
Q. What is something unique or interesting about yourself that you have not shared in an interview yet? How would your teammates describe you?
I don’t have a lot of weird talents or quirks, but I’m studying Spanish at the moment. I’ve wanted to learn a new language for some time.
I don’t really know how my teammates would describe me. Before this, I asked the guys what they would say. I was surprised; no one really said anything, so maybe they’re afraid of me, which I guess isn’t a bad thing.
Q. Your boat broke down and you’re stranded on a desert island? What book, food and movie would you have with you?
For my book, I would figure I’d have to bring a long book since I’d be there for a while. I read a book called Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace a while ago, and it’s a gigantic book so I’d take that, and I figure that would keep me company for a while. For food, I’m assuming water would count, so if I could have that, I’d bring fruit. And, since I have a TV and a VCR on this desert island, I’d have to bring a movie I can watch over and over again. I’d go with Caddyshack.
Q. Were you ever affected by a natural disaster such as a hurricane, a fire or a flood? What happened and how did it affect you? In the event of a natural disaster, besides your family, what is the first thing you grab out of your home and why?
In 2007 or 2008, I lived in an apartment back in Boston on the first floor, and we shared the basement with another apartment. Our neighbor started a fire in their half of the apartment. It was actually very big and very serious. It was dangerous, but luckily my roommates in the basement woke up in time, otherwise they would have been trapped. It was a really bad situation, but we escaped the house around five in the morning.
In the event of a natural disaster, knowing my family was safe, I would grab things like my photos and other things that are irreplaceable.

Apesar de que es una de las personas mas reservadas en el equipo, Jeff Larentowicz es un lider historico y capitan en la ausencia de Logan Pause. Proveniendo de Philadelphia, Larentowicz atendio a Brown University y ahi fue donde el tuvo tremendo impacto, ya que era el lider de goleo antes de entrar al draft y ser fichado por New England Revolution en el 2005. Antes de jugar para el Chicago Fire, Larentowicz gano el campeonato de la MLS con el Colorado Rapids en el 2010. En su primera temporada con el Chicago Fire, jugo 33 de 34 partidos y su liderazgo fue una parte muy importante en el desarollo del equipo.
Q. ¿Cuál es el gol o juego que más recuerdas?
El partido más memorable, sin duda diría que la Copa MLS del 2010 con el Colorado Rapids que fue una experiencia realmente única. Ningún gol realmente se destaca como más memorable, ya que todos son diferentes. Pero, si tuviera que elegir uno, yo diría que el gol reciente contra el DC United el 4 de octubre fue bastante memorable. Yo sabía que era un partido importante para el Fire y para nuestra aficion, así que marcando el primer gol era bastante bueno.
Q. ¿Cuándo tenías cinco años, qué querías ser de grande y por qué? ¿Qué es lo que quieres lograr en los próximos diez años?
Siempre supe que quería ser un atleta, pero no necesariamente de fútbol. Me encantaba el baloncesto, así que cuando yo tenía cinco años, creo que sólo quería jugar baloncesto de grande.

Q. ¿Quién o qué te inspira y porque? ¿Cuál es la lección más importante que has aprendido?
Esa es una pregunta difícil. Tengo que decir que mi familia y mis padres me inspiran. Siempre han trabajado duro, y aunque yo no estoy haciendo un trabajo igual al que ellos hicieron, esto sigue siendo un trabajo que yo me esfuerzo y puedo alcanzar metas.
Para mí, la lección más importante que he aprendido en la vida es que el resultado de tu esfuerzo va a ser equivalente, sino mejor, a la entrega que pones inicialmente. Si deseas obtener algún tipo de retorno en la vida, tienes que trabajar duro para conseguirlo. La posibilidad no se te es dada sin el trabajo duro.
Q. ¿Qué es algo único e interesante acerca de ti que no has compartido en una entrevista todavía? ¿Cómo te describirían tus compañeros de equipo?
No tengo un montón de talentos extraños o varias peculiaridades, pero estoy estudiando español en este momento. He querido aprender un nuevo idioma desde hace algún tiempo.
Realmente no sé cómo mis compañeros de equipo me describirían. Antes de esto, les pregunté a los chicos lo que iban a decir. Me sorprendió, nadie dijo nada, así que tal vez tienen miedo de mí, que supongo que no es una mala cosa.
Q. ¿Tu barco se descompuso y estás varado en una isla desierta? ¿Qué libro, comida y película tendrías contigo?
Para mi libro, me imagino que tendría que llevar un libro con varias páginas porque estaría allí por un buen tiempo. Leí un libro llamado La broma infinita de David Foster Wallace hace un tiempo, y es un libro gigantesco así que me llevo ese, y me imagino que me mantendría entretenido un tiempo. Para la comida, supongo que contaría con agua, por lo que si podría tener eso, me gustaría llevar fruta. Y, ya que tengo un televisor y un reproductor de vídeo en esta isla desierta, tendría que traer una película que pueda ver una y otra vez. Me quedo con Caddyshack.

En realidad, fue muy grande y muy grave. Era peligroso, pero por suerte mis compañeros de cuarto en el sótano se despertaron a tiempo, de lo contrario se habrían quedado atrapados. Fue una situación muy mala, pero escaparon de la casa alrededor de las cinco de la mañana.
En el caso de un desastre natural, sabiendo que mi familia está a salvo, me gustaría tomar las cosas como mis fotos y otras cosas que son irremplazables.
