Chicago Fire midfielder Aleksandar Katai earned his eighth appearance for the Serbia Men's National Team on Saturday afternoon, entering the nation's 2020 UEFA EURO qualifying match against Portugal as a second-half substitution.
The 28-year-old was swapped on for midfielder Filip Kostic in the 83rd minute with Serbia trailing 3-1. Two minutes later, Aleksandar Mitrovic would close the Serbian deficit to one with a confident upper-90 finish past Portuguese goalkeeper Rui Patrício. Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva would ultimately put the game out of reach 60 seconds later, however, adding the Portuguese fourth in a 4-2 finish.
The result pushed Portugal into second place in qualifying Group B with five points taken through three matches, while Serbia are in fourth on four points. Ukraine currently leads Group B with 13 points after five matches played.
Katai and Serbia are right back at on Tuesday, Sept. 10, when they travel to face third-place Luxembourg in a qualifier at Josy Barthel Stadium in Luxembourg City. The match is set to kickoff at 1:45 p.m. CT, with coverage on ESPN3.
