The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicked off with a bang on Thursday, with host Russia defeating Saudi Arabia 5-0 in the opening match.
Russia started their goal-scoring spree early in the first half when Yuri Gazinskiy scored with the first shot on target after only 12 minutes. Just before halftime, substitute Denis Cheryshev slotted in another goal to put Russia safely ahead. The second half saw Russia capping their solid start with a header in the 71st minute and two further goals in stoppage time.
With the World Cup underway, MLS players and teams began sharing their excitement for the tournament on social media. Our own Bastian Schweinsteiger kicked off the tournament with a #TBT photo of him celebrating with the German National Team after their memorable 2014 World Cup victory. Germany triumphed 1-0 over Argentina in extra time four years ago in Brazil.

Speaking of Germany and Argentina, Fire teammate and Argentine forward Luis Solignac told the Chicago Tribune that he expects his national team to reach the final, adding that he hopes to see them avenge their 2014 defeat to Germany in this year's final.
This year, the MLS has 19 players representing six different countries -- Panama, Egypt, Costa Rica, Mexico, Sweden and Peru -- in the tournament. Also of note, MLS sent the most referees to Russia than any other leagues in the world. The first of the league's players -- Los Angeles FC's defender Omar Gaber -- will feature Friday, when Egypt takes on Uruguay in their long-awaited return to the World Cup stage.
Here's a look at the schedule for Friday, offering the first tripleheader of the tournament:
- 7 AM CT: Egypt vs. Uruguay (Group A)
- 10 AM CT: Morocco vs. Iran (Group B)
- 1 PM CT: Portugal vs. Spain (Group B)
