With the ninth overall selection in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft the Chicago Fire Soccer Club selected defender Austin Berry from the University of Louisville. In his senior season, Berry, a 6-2, 180 pound central defender, was named a NSCAA Third Team All-American, Soccer America Second Team MVP and Big East Conference First Team. A member of the 2010 Chicago Fire Premier team, Berry signed a deal with MLS prior to today’s MLS SuperDraft. Per club and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“Austin is a menacing defender who will be a fantastic addition to the Chicago Fire Soccer Club,” said Fire head coach Frank Klopas. “His strength in the back, ability in the air and the danger he provides going forward will be a great asset to us heading into the 2012 MLS season.”
Berry, a product of Cincinnati, OH, joins the Fire after a successful college career at the University of Louisville. The 23-year-old defender appeared in 95 matches, starting 87, in his time with the Cardinals, tallying 11 goals and five assists. As a redshirt Junior, Berry was an integral piece in leading Louisville to a the NCAA College Cup Final.
The 2010 and 2011 All-Big East Conference First teamer appeared in all 16 matches scoring one goal as a member of the Chicago Fire Premier during the 2010 USL Premier Development League campaign.
