Chicago Fire Designated Player David Accam netted the first goal of his international career Sunday, accounting for the final tally in Ghana’s 7-1 defeat of Mauritius in the opening round of qualifying matches for the 2017 African Cup of Nations.

Accam began the game on the bench and watched as his side raced to a 5-1 lead at halftime. He entered the match as Ghana’s first substitute, replacing Leicester City’s Jeffrey Schlupp, and capped the scoring with his stoppage time strike.

Earlier this year, Accam was a member of the Ghanaian side that advanced to the final of the 2015 African Cup of Nations, earning his first international cap in a group stage match against Senegal. He also featured for the Black Stars in a friendly with Mali on March 31, 2015.
Accam is tied for the Chicago Fire team lead in goals this year (4) and leads the club in shots on goal, with 17 in nine games played.
On Saturday, Fire midfielder Shaun Maloney also factored in the decision for his international side, firing the shot that led to an Ireland own goal in Scotland’s 1-1 draw in UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying.
