HOUSTON (Tuesday, May 14, 2013) – The Houston Dynamo Reserves defeated the Chicago Fire Reserves 2-0, Tuesday morning, at the Houston Amateur Sports Park. Jason Johnson and Luiz Camargo provided the goals and Erich Marscheider made four saves as the Dynamo Reserves improved to 3-0-0 on the season. With the loss, Chicago falls to 1-3-0.
Despite out-shooting the Fire 7-5 in the first half, the home side had the better of the opportunities. Rookie striker Jason Johnson hit the crossbar with a chip in the seventh minute and followed that up with a strike that hit off both posts in the 18th minute.
Chicago’s best chance in the first half came in the 43rd minute. Right back Mike Videira slipped a pass to Quincy Amarikwa on the right flank. Amarikwa beat a defender in the box but second-year goalkeeper Erich Marscheider stayed big and Amarikwa’s shot hit him square in the chest.
The Dynamo managed to break through in the 48th minute. Johnson intercepted an errant pass and played a give-and-go with Dynamo Academy striker Elo Ozumba. Johnson did not waste the return pass and ripped a left-footed strike into the far corner of the net to give the Dynamo a 1-0 lead.
The Fire had two quality chances in the second half but neither troubled Marscheider. The first came in the 67th minute when Yazid Atouba curled a free kick on target around the wall. The second came from a 35-yard strike from Alex in the 73rd minute. Marscheider corralled both attempts.
Chicago played with only 10 men for the final 10 minutes after Atouba was involved in a collision and had to be helped off the field. The Fire chose not to insert their only sub, goalkeeper Alec Kann.
Houston was able to capitalize on the man-advantage, doubling their lead in the 80th minute. After Johnson picked up a loose ball deep in Chicago territory, the Jamaican rookie slipped the ball to Mike Chabala on the left flank. The veteran defender curled a cross to the near post and Camargo beat his defender to head the ball past goalkeeper Paolo Tornaghi.
The Dynamo Reserves have a quick turnaround, playing USL-Pro club Charleston Battery on Sunday at BBVA Compass Stadium. The match will kick off at 10 a.m. and can be seen live on HoustonDynamo.com. The Chicago Fire Reserves will have a month off before traveling to North Carolina to take on USL-Pro side Charlotte Eagles on June 14.
