Chicago Fire Homegrown prospect Harry Shipp received another NCAA accolade Thursday as he was named one of three finalists for the prestigious MAC Hermann Award, college soccer’s equivalent to the Heisman Trophy.
Shipp adds the honor to his ACC Offensive Player of the Year award as well as the fact that he and Notre Dame are still alive in the 2013 NCAA College Cup.
The Fighting Irish take on New Mexico in Friday’s first semifinal live at 4:00pm CT on ESPNU and should they win, will face the winner of the Virginia/Maryland matchup in Sunday’s final at PPL Park in Chester, Penn.
Last week, Shipp was certified by MLS as a Fire Homegrown product, giving the club the right of first refusal to sign him directly to the squad and bypass next month’s SuperDraft entirely.
Though he’s still somewhat new on the job, Fire head coach Frank Yallop has been watching the club’s next potential Homegrown signing.
“Harry’s done really well in his time at Notre Dame,” said Yallop. “I’ve seen him play a number of times and he’s got the ability where nothing flusters him. He’s very smooth, he uses the ball, turns well and can go at guys. He’s someone we’d be keen on bringing into our system.”
