Chicago Fire offseason signing David Accam earned an honor worthy of his Designated Player tag on Wednesday, when the 24-year-old forward was named to Ghana’s final roster for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.
Wednesday’s announcement marks the first time that Accam has been named to a Ghana roster for a major tournament. He is the only MLS player on the Black Stars’ roster; Houston Dynamo defender Samuel Inkoom was on the 26-man provisional roster but did not make former-Chelsea manager Avram Grant's final cut.
Ghana will take on Senegal, South Africa and Algeria in Group C, the tournament’s Group of Death. Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Rais MBolhi is slated to start in net for Algeria at the tournament.
New York Red Bulls defender Ambroise Oyongo will also likely be at the tournament. The outside back is on Cameroon’s 24-man provisional roster, and is a good bet to make the final cut for the Indomitable Lions.
The Africa Cup of Nations will be held from January 17-February 8 in Equatorial Guinea. The tournament consists of four groups of four teams. Each team will play three group stage games, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the quarterfinals.
