CHICAGO, Ill. (Monday, July 22, 2013) – Major League Soccer announced Monday that Fire forward Chris Rolfe was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for week 21 of the 2013 MLS season.
The Kettering, Ohio native’s first half brace helped the Fire defeat long-time Eastern Conference nemesis D.C. United 4-1 Saturday evening at Toyota Park.
Rolfe opened scoring just two minutes into the match when Joel Lindpere played a perfectly weighted ball in the air to Rolfe at the top of the 18-yard-box. Rolfe leaped into the air and sent his right-footed volley over D.C. United ‘keeper Joe Willis to give the Fire the early lead.
Rolfe completed his brace one minute into first half stoppage time when Lindpere played a one-time chip over the United defense. Rolfe raced behind the defense and slotted his shot into the lower right corner.
The Fire forward narrowly beat out teammate Joel Lindpere, who tallied one goal and two assists, for the honor.
The Men in Red return to action Saturday, July 27 when they take on the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium at 8:00 p.m. CT (NBC Sports Network/La Ley 107.9).
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information and membership information can be found at http://www.soccerreporters.com/.
