CHICAGO, Ill. (Oct. 19, 2013) – The Chicago Fire Soccer Club announced its annual team awards, as selected by local media Saturday prior to kickoff of the Chicago Fire vs. Toronto FC match Presented by University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System at Toyota Park, naming forward Mike Magee Most Valuable Player and goalkeeper Sean Johnson Defender of the Year. Since joining the Fire from the Los Angeles Galaxy in May, Magee’s 13 goals have also earned him the club’s Golden Boot award.
MOST VALUABLE PLAYER/GOLDEN BOOT: Mike Magee was named 2013 Chicago Fire Most Valuable Player which is voted on by local media. Magee joined the Fire in a trade on May 25, 2013 from the LA Galaxy. In 20 games with the Men in Red, Magee has also earned the club’s Golden Boot for his 13 goals and four assists. The Chicago native, named a 2013 MLS All-Star, currently has a total of 19 goals to his credit this season, and sits in second place in the tightly-contested MLS Golden Boot race, just one goal behind Montreal Impact forward Marco Di Vaio.
DEFENDER OF THE YEAR: Goalkeeper Sean Johnson was named Fire Defender of the year, as selected by media members. Now in his fourth season with the Fire, the Lilburn, Ga. native has commanded the Fire backline for 26 matches in 2013. With the U.S. International in goal, Johnson has earned five shutouts and led the Men in Red to an 11-9-6 record.
