Chicago Fire FC captain Francisco Calvo scored a crucial goal for the Costa Rica Men's National Team in the Concacaf Nations League Third Place Match on Sunday night, but Los Ticos were ultimately defeated by Honduras in a penalty kick shootout.
Calvo earned his 54th appearance for his home country on the night, and his second-straight 90-minute shift in defense for head coach Rónald González Brenes. Costa Rica got an eighth minute lead through Joel Campbell, before Honduras' Edwin Rodriguez equalized in the 48th.
Down 2-1 after Alberth Elis scored in the 80th minute to give Honduras a late lead, Calvo headed in an 85th minute corner kick to level the score at 2-2 and send the match to penalty kicks.
Calvo would score on Costa Rica's second penalty kick attempt, but Honduras claimed the 5-4 victory after a six-round shootout.
While Costa Rica's Concacaf Nations League came to an end on Sunday, they'll return to action this week when they face the United States in a friendly match at 6:00 p.m. CT on Wednesday, June 9. The match will be televised from Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah on ESPN2, UniMás and TUDN.
