BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- When Patrick Nyarko goes down and stays on the field like he did in the 36th minute of Wednesday’s 2-0 defeat to D.C. United , it’s usually not a great sign.
Nyarko collided with United defender James Riley in the 11th minute of Wednesday’s U.S. Open Cup semifinal defeat, with the Ghanaian feeling the brunt of the blow to his head.
Nyarko left the field, was checked out by Fire training staff and then returned to the game moments later.
As he’s known to do, the fleet-footed winger provided danger and nearly gave the Fire the lead in the 18th minute but his volley from Dilly Duka’s service on the left went just wide of the United goal.
In the 36th minute though, Nyarko went back down to the ground and was immediately removed from the match after showing symptoms of a concussion.
Following the game, Fire head coach Frank Klopas confirmed that Nyarko was removed from the match after “hitting his head.”
The six-year Fire veteran has been listed as “Out” on the Athletico Injury Report ahead of Saturday’s home match vs. Montreal, with training staff confirming he would be monitored day-to-day.
